The Community Blood Center is taking emergency measures to avert a regional blood shortage as the community acts to halt the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.
Blood drive cancellations have risen to 55, with a projection now of 2,400 lost units, representatives said.
The CBC is urging eligible members of the community to donate blood during the following upcoming local blood drives:
• Mary Rutan Hospital 205 Palmer Ave. — 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., today, Wednesday, March 25.
After Wednesday, March 18, collections CBC’s hospital inventory is holding at a 7-day supply with 7 to 14- days available across blood types.
CBC officials said in spite on the health crisis, the blood supply is safe and it is safe to donate. There are no reported cases of coronavirus transmission through blood transfusion.
Donors must be in good health. People with any cough or cold symptoms should not come to a blood drive. Take your temperature before coming to a blood drive.
CBC is increasing hygienic and sanitary procedures.
Blood also drives are not mass gatherings. They are controlled events with infection safeguards to protect donors, staff, and blood products.
