Bellefontaine’s baseball team played small ball to hang with host Indian Lake on Friday and escape with a dramatic 2-0 win in eight innings during a local Central Buckeye Conference crossover game.
The Chieftains improve their record to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the CBC, while the Lakers slip to 10-3, 5-2.
Both teams went scoreless through the first seven innigs.
In the top of the eighth inning, Bellefontaine’s Jaeden Campbell got on base with a single. He stole second base and later advanced to third after Cole Comstock laid down a bunt to reach first base.
After recording an out, Indian Lake walked the Chiefs’ Alex Caudill to load the bases.
Bellefontaine’s Markus Brugler followed with an RBI single to score Campbell and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
The Lakers recorded the second out on a fielder’s choice. However, they walked Bellefontaine’s Kevin Gomez on the next at-bat to score Caudill and make it a 2-0 lead. A pop out ended the inning.
Bellefontaine’s Caudill came in to pitch the eighth inning and recorded three straight strikeouts to finish the game. He recorded the win.
Keyon Collier pitched the first seven innings and had two strikeouts.
Offensively for BHS, Brugler went 2-4 with an RBI, Comstock went 2-4 and Gomez had an RBI.
Indian Lake’s offense was limited to five hits. Gavin Lones led the team with a double, while Caleb Wurster, Logan Evans, Derek Cline and Chase Baldwin all had a hit.

Raiders zap Braves
Benjamin Logan’s baseball team jumped on visiting Springfield Shawnee early Friday and held on for a 9-4 win in Central Buckeye Conference crossover action.
The win pushes the Raiders to 11-1 on the season and 6-1 in the CBC.
Ben Logan built a 7-2 cushion after three innings. The Raiders drove in two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead.
Shawnee scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t make up any more ground.
Blake Peterson powered the Raider offense by going 2-2 with two doubles and an RBI, Kainan Stoner went 2-4 with a double, Kade Arn went 2-2 with a double and an RBI and Austin McGowan added one RBI.
Peterson earned the win and had six strikeouts.
Ben Logan hosts the Micah Gregg tournament today. The Raiders play St. Marys at 11 a.m. and Celina at 3 p.m.

WL-Salem tops Southeastern
West Liberty-Salem’s baseball team worked its way past visiting Southeastern for a 6-0 win Friday in Ohio Heritage Conference action.
The Tigers are now 5-4 overall and 5-1 in the OHC.
WL-Salem built a 2-0 lead after two innings and drove in three runs int he third inning for a 5-0 advantage. The Tigers added one more run in the fifth inning for a 6-0 score and held on the rest of the way.
Payton Knight went 2-3 with a double and an RBI to spark the Tiger offense, while Nick Burden and Adam LaRoche each had two RBI.
Burden earned the win on the mound with seven strikeouts and scattered three hits.

Riverside falls to Houston in 10 innings
Riverside’s baseball team were dealt a heart breaker after falling to host Houston 4-3 in
10 innings Friday in a non-league meeting.
The Pirates fall to 5-5.
Houston led 2-0 after five innings, but Riverside rallied to plate three runs in the top of the sixth inning and take a 3-2 advantage.
The Wildcats responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 3-3.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the 10th inning when Houston drove in a run to win the game.
Zander Crouch led the Riverside offense by going 2-4, while Zane Rose and Gavin Robison each had an RBI.
Warren Shockey took the loss for the Pirates, but had six strikeouts.
Riverside travels to Northridge for a non-league doubleheader.
