Summer School is in full swing at Bellefontaine City Schools this month to assist pupils with building a strong educational foundation in preparation for transitioning grades.
Students attend Summer School at Bellefontaine Elementary School and Bellefontaine Middle School on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
BMS is hosting Summer School for grades 6-8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Whitney Stolly is the Summer School coordinator at BMS and teachers are Joliece Reed, Taylor Bodey, and Paul Kite. Nineteen students are enrolled.
“There is an academic component to help build on reading and math skills, which builds confidence. Our classroom participation has increased this week,” Stolly said.
Students are rewarded, too. There is a raffle for attendance and completing math and reading lessons. Each raffle winner receives a gift certificate provided by BMS+. There is a candy drawing each day as well.
The students also play games to stimulate creative thinking and to build teamwork skills.
Students in grades 9-12 are completing credit recovery through the Virtual Learning Academy.
BES is the Summer School site for grades K-5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Megan Cira is the Summer School coordinator at BES. Seventy-five students are enrolled and nine teachers are leading the program.
Students are receiving extra practice on skills learned throughout the year. There is a smaller student-to-teacher ratio, which allows for tutoring in a small group setting. Pupils also have access to technology and curriculum.
There will be a field trip on the final day, June 30, to celebrate their hard work.
BCS provides busing for Summer School students as well.
