August Bellefontaine bicentennial celebration scheduled
Bellefontaine officials are eyeing late-August as the date for the city’s bicentennial celebration.
Parks superintendent Kris Myers reported Tuesday in a regular meeting of the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District Board that a 200th “birthday party,” for the city of Bellefontaine is being planned for Saturday, Aug. 29, in and around the downtown area.
The day-long event is being planned as a “block party” style event that will include outdoor entertainment and children’s activities.
This year marks the 200th year for the city of Bellefontaine, and sponsored banners recognizing the city’s bicentennial currently line downtown streets.
The Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District Board lauded success of the growth of its Winter Walking Program, which is underway through the month of March.
The success of the park district’s winter walking program initiative was also lauded during Tuesday’s meeting.
It’s the fourth year for the program, which provides participants heated locations to get their daily steps. The locations are: Bellefontaine Elementary School, 1001 Ludlow Road; Indian Lake High School, 6210 State Route 235; and Benjamin Logan Elementary School, 4560 County Road 26.
There will soon be another location opening up in Riverside, as well.
“It’s cool to see that it’s grown this way,” Myers said.
In new business, the board approved a Color Run for May 9 at Calvary Christian School.
Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District also hosts an evening full moon owl walk beginning at 8:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, in the Troop House at Myeerah Nature Preserve, 7405 State Route 540.
That date marks the beginning of the 2020 education dates at Camp Myeerah. Weekly outdoor, hands-on educational events are conducted throughout the year.
Additional sessions begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 29; March 28; April 18; May 30; June 13; Aug. 15; Sept. 26; Oct. 24; and Nov. 21.
The July session is scheduled for 8 p.m., Thursday, July 30.
