More than 300 hungry people with smiling faces and sticky fingers filled the Bellefontaine High School cafeteria Saturday morning for the annual Kiwanis pancake breakfast. Besides the meal, attendees could participate in a coloring contest and get their photo taken with the Easter Bunny.
Though an annual event for nearly 20 years, this was the Kiwanis’ long-awaited return after two years off due to the pandemic. The public was clearly eager to be back as the club ran out of several items and had to make a grocery store trip to be sure they had enough.
“We had a huge crowd this time,” said Kiwanis member and event organizer Kyle Springs. “It was close to the same number or more than we had previously.”
All money brought in through tickets for the breakfast, which were $7 for adults, and from a 50/50 drawing will go to support local school scholarships thanks to the following donations:
• SpartanNash — pancake mix and syrup;
• Ruth Bowden — sausage and milk;
• Community Markets on north Main Street, Bellefontaine — orange juice; and
• Sweet Aromas — coffee.
All of the unopened products were donated to Our Daily Bread.
In addition, the Logan County Celiac Support Group provided gluten-free pancakes. Photos with the Easter bunny were taken by Ashley Shields from Aurora Photos, LLC.
Kiwanis club member Julie Schrader and her father, 95-year-old Allie Schrader, volunteered at the door, selling/taking tickets. Julie, who’s helped serve the food before, enjoyed her first time working on the event planning committee.
“It was very well organized and ran smoothly. Everyone was friendly,” Julie said. “A lot of people donated above and beyond the cost of the tickets to put more money toward the scholarship fund.”
