Accomplished pianist Bill Figley of West Liberty treated his neighbors, friends and family to a lawn concert featuring a number of patriotic tunes Tuesday evening at his Leonard Street residence in celebration of his 94th birthday, which he also marked Tuesday. The U.S. Navy World War II veteran and retired pharmacist said he typically performs a number of concerts at nursing homes within a 75-mile radius of his home as an outreach ministry, including 269 concerts logged three years ago. The coronavirus changed those nursing home plans this year, but he thought the lawn concert could be another way to give back. “I’ve had many good experiences sharing music with people from all over, and I’m not planning to stop anytime soon. It brings a lot of joy,” said the piano aficionado, who began lessons at age 5 1/2 at his mother’s insistence. Now he plays by ear and without sheet music, performing about 1,200 songs by memory from all genres.
