Urbana University has tapped into Bellefontaine’s football program for a big haul this recruiting season.
Three Chieftain seniors signed with UU last week. That group includes running back Garrett Gross, lineman Jacob Kidwell and defensive back Brandon Hayes.
“Any time you have a player get the opportunity to continue their football career, it’s exciting,” said Toby Smith, who coached the three Urbana-bound players at Bellefontaine. “These guys are not ready to stop playing football and I am glad they have the chance to further their careers at the college level.”
Gross, a hard-nosed 5-10, 205-pounder, finished his Chieftain career with 2,728 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns.
As a senior, he ran for 1,019 yards and 14 TDs on 147 carries.
Gross said he was attracted to the UU program because of the proximity to home and a good relationship with the coaching staff.
“I really liked the campus and I really enjoyed the coaching staff,” said Gross. “They were a lot of fun when I took my visits there. I really think I’ll enjoy it at Urbana. It’s also really close to home so I liked that, too.
“Ever since I was a little kid I’ve always wanted to play at the next level,” said Gross. “It’s been a really good time going through this process. It’s a relief now that it’s done and I can focus on the next chapter of my life.”
Gross hopes to make an impact somewhere on the field early on in his college career
“When I get there I want to compete for a spot that is open, even if it’s on special teams,” said Gross. “I want to gain as much knowledge as I can with the program and just go from there.”
Kidwell, at 6-1, 225, was a valuable two-way contributor on the offensive and defensive lines for the Chiefs during his prep career. He is expected to play defense at UU.
During his junior and senior seasons, Kidwell tallied 48 solo tackles, 109 total tackles and 10 sacks from his defensive end position.
Kidwell also felt a close connection with the Urbana staff during his visits there.
“I love their coaches,” he said. “Right away, you could tell they were good people. It feels like their program is headed in the right direction and I want to be part of that.”
Having two high school teammates playing alongside him is another benefit Kidwell looks forward to at UU.
“It’s big to have people you know and are already comfortable with playing with you,” he said. “I think it will make things a lot easier.”
Hayes, 5-7, 150, was a key member of the Chieftain secondary the past two seasons. During those two campaigns, he combined for 45 solo tackles, 87 total tackles, one sack, a fumble recovery and an interception.
Gross, Kidwell and Hayes will be joining a Blue Knights program this is coming off a season in which in went 7-4 overall and 7-3 in the Mountain East Conference. Urbana competes at the NCAA Division II level.
