Driver charged with OVI, resisting arrest
Harold J. Walters, 52, of 2650 Township Road 182, Bellefontaine, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs related to an incident about 9:15 p.m. Saturday.
Deputies responded to a hotrod complaint in the area of County Road 29 just east of County Road 1. They were informed by the caller that the driver had entered a driveway at the registered vehicle owner’s address, 2650 T.R. 182.
Deputies arrived in the area and observed that the suspect vehicle was parked in the driveway of that address with its engine running and headlights activated. Walters reportedly exited the vehicle and walked toward a fence line to urinate.
Upon approaching Walters, deputies found that he had fallen into a thorn bush in the area. The defendant also became very agitated at deputies’ presence on his property.
Deputies observed that he showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He declined to participate in field sobriety tests.
Walters initially refused attempts to place him under arrest and additional deputies responded to the scene. The defendant was placed under arrest, and he told deputies he had consumed alcohol that day while in Bellefontaine.
The caller told deputies she had first observed Walters operating his vehicle in the area of Main Street and Gunntown Road in the city and noticed him swerving and said he also drove up on a sidewalk adjacent to La Palma, 2201 U.S. Route 68.
She said his vehicle continued eastbound on Gunntown Road and then onto C.R. 29, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the road and nearly striking another vehicle head-on.
Walters was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
