A big first quarter jump started Riverside to a 68-50 victory over visiting Waynesfield-Goshen in Northwest Central Conference boys basketball action Friday night.
The Pirates improve to 3-11 overall and 2-3 in the league, while the Tigers drop to 3-9, 1-4.
“Tonight’s scorewas not very indicative of how the game actually went,” said RHS head coach Seth Bodenmiller. “We got off to a pretty good start, but we knew that some of their shots were going to start falling.
“They came back in the second quarter and got it within four points a couple of times down the stretch. Thankfully, we had a lot of guys step up and we were able to make some big shots and get things to fall back in our direction.”
Riverside raced out to a 19-2 lead after the opening quarter. W-Goshen came battling back with a 25-14 run in the second quarter. That left the Pirates ahead by six points (33-27) at halftime.
The Pirates edged the Tigers 15-14 in the third quarter to hold a 48-41 advantage. Riverside pulled away in the final period with a 20-9 run.
Kaden Burk poured in 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to fuel Riverside. John Zumberger had 15 points, Wade Auflick tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds and Kale Long added eight points with 14 rebounds.
In junior varsity action, Riverside ran past W-Goshen 79-39. Landon Stewart powered the Pirates with 26 points and Jayden Burchett had 18 points.
