The American skier timed 52.99 seconds on the Crveni Spust course to lead Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. Petra Vlhova of Slovakia was 0.20 further behind in third.

Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, the slalom World Cup champion two years ago, was fifth and had more than two seconds to make up in the second run.

Shiffrin, the overall World Cup leader, is going for her seventh win of the season and 38th overall. She has won four of the last five World Cup races, including last week's slalom in Lienz where she also led the field by more than a second after the opening run.
