PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell has grabbed a share of the early lead with a 2-under 68 at Pinehurst No. 2.
McDowell was tied for the top spot with Kevin Na, and three other early starters opened with 69s on a rustic course that gave up more birdies than expected Thursday.
Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and Henrik Stenson were one stroke off the lead, taking advantage of a thick cloud cover at the start of the round.
Kuchar shot 3-under 32 on the front side, but a shaky finish knocked him out of the lead. He bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes before his par putt at the final hole tumbled into the cup on its last turn, bringing out a smile as he headed toward the clubhouse.
