Soap Box Derby in Ohio considers night racing

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The International Soap Box Derby is considering adding night racing next year.

The Akron-based organization says the Derby will be testing the placement of portable light towers at the Derby Downs track in hopes of conducting racing there at night in 2014.

More than 70 events were held at the track in Akron this year.

Derby President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Mazur (MAY'-zur) says there already has been a request for night racing next year.

Mazur says the derby wants to be able to hold events and races on the track at night. He says the move is part of an overall plan to increase the number of events at the track and offer different types of events to the organization's customers and partners.
