Eighth-seeded Riverside fell behind early to fourth-seeded Botkins, but rallied in the third quarter to take the lead. The two teams then battled down to the final buzzer as the Trojans escaped with a 30-28 victory.

It was an emotional finish for the Pirates (10-13), who haven’t won a tournament game in several years.

Tuesday’s game showed the improvement Riverside has made after a 58-35 loss to Botkins during the regular season.

“We haven’t competed in a tournament game for a while and as long as I’ve been here,” said Riverside head coach Danielle King. “A lot of people didn’t expect us to even be in this game. I’m so proud of the girls for how they played and executed.”
