Lima Perry football coach killed in car crash

Lima Perry head football coach Herb Lane was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon, according to a story in The Lima News.

Lane, 44, was traveling north over the Interstate 75 overpass when his car struck a bridge abutment and then skidded into the path of a southbound vehicle. The two vehicles collided. Lane was pronounced dead at St. Rita’s Medical Center.

The driver of the other vehicle, Benjamin Hefner, 24, was taken to Lima Memorial Health System where he was listed in stable condition late Monday.

Lane completed his first season as head coach of the Commodores last fall. He previously served as Perry’s junior high football coach.

In addition, Lane was an assistant coach for the Perry boys basketball team, which is scheduled to play in a regional semifinal game tonight.

Administrators canceled school at Perry today in the wake of Lane’s death.
