Starting in November and finishing in March, the winter sports season lasts the longest of all the high school sports seasons. It stretches five months and is a grind whether its basketball, wrestling, swimming or bowling.
For wrestling, our season actually got extended by two weeks. This was to help accommodate the OHSAA state duals tournament and to get away from the Arnold Classic and Fitness Expo, which is typically the same weekend as the individual state tournament in Columbus.
If you look at the calendar, last season the Central Buckeye Conference tournament took place during the first weekend of February. This year’s league tournament is finally here for Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan and Indian Lake.
The CBC tournament is Saturday at Northwestern High School in Springfield. It begins at 10 a.m. with finals expected to start around 3:30 p.m. There are just 10 teams in the league this year so the tournament may run a little faster than normal.
It will be the last season for Greenon as the Knights move to the Ohio Heritage Conference next year. Jonathan Alder will join the CBC next year in the Kenton Trail division and the Pioneers usually produce a solid wrestling team.
Graham, which is ranked fifth in the nation, headlines the league again. The Falcons have the top seed in 13 of the 14 weight classes entering the tournament. They will win the Mad River division and finish first overall.
