WL-Salem moves up to take top spot in latest state softball poll
05/15/08 After several weeks at number two, West Liberty-Salem’s softball team moved up to the top spot in this week’s Division III state coaches poll. The Tigers had been second behind Hebron Lakewood, but slipped ahead of Lakewood in the latest poll. The final state poll will be released next week. WL-Salem has 77 points and three first-place votes, while Lakewood has three first-place votes and 75 points. The Tigers finished the regular season at 26-0. “It is a nice honor to be recognized by the other coaches,” said WL-Salem head coach Lanay Detwiler. “I don’t think the girls have to prove that they deserve this ranking, but we got it because of the way we have played, and we just want to continue to play the same way.” While the Tigers have some talented young players, they also possess some seasoned veterans like senior pitcher Emily Kauffman and senior second baseman Shae Blake. “We have girls that have the mental attitude to come up with a clutch hit or a big play,” said Detwiler. “Our experience is definitely a big key for us.”
