Chieftain offense unloads for 17-1 rout of Milton-Union
05/14/08 Bellefontaine’s baseball team started Division II sectional tournament play with a bang Tuesday as the Chiefs buried Milton-Union 17-1 in five innings at Blue Jacket Park. The Chiefs improve to 14-8 on the season and advance to play at Northwestern in a sectional semifinal on Thursday. “It was nice to be able to get out of the gate and get the tournament started,” said Bellefontaine head coach Mark Brunswick. “What was also neat about a game like this is to see some of the other guys get some work in.” Bellefontaine led 1-0 after two innings and then exploded for 13 runs in the third inning to lead 14-0. The Chiefs added three more runs in the fourth and the Bulldogs scored their lone run in the fifth. Brandon Winter and Nolan Hunt combined for a two-hitter on the mound for the winners. The two combined for seven strikeouts and one walk. Offensively, T.J. Garman had two hits and Josh Kauffman, Jeremy Clifton and Zach Horton each had doubles to lead the Chieftains. Bellefontaine now turns its attention to fourth-seeded Northwestern and its pitching standout Tyler Stephenson. “We are going to have to play a complete game,” said Brunswick. “We have to be the aggressor and set the tone early because Stephenson is a quality pitcher. Defensively, we have to be sharp and we can’t extend innings.” BELLEFONTAINE 17 — M-UNION 1 (five innings)
