WL-Salem girls in first after opening day of OHC meet

West Liberty-Salem’s girls track and field team got off to a strong start Monday in its quest for another Ohio Heritage Conference title.

The Tiger girls are currently first at the OHC meet with 30.5 points after completing the preliminaries and scoring four events at Mechanicsburg High School.

Cedarville is second in the girls standings with 20 points, Northeastern is third (17), Mechanicsburg is fourth (16), Greeneview is fifth (14.5) and Triad is sixth (10).

In the boys meet, the WL-Salem boys are sitting third with 16 points after scoring three events.

Northeastern has taken charge by scoring 30 points for a first-place lead. Greeneview is second (18), Mechanicsburg is fourth (13) and Triad is fifth (7).

The meet resumes Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Hannah Ropp and Kelsie Markin gave the Tiger girls a big boost by claiming the top two spots in the pole vault. Ropp won the event with a height of 8-0, while Markin was second with a height of 7-6.

The Tigers’ 3200 relay team of Christine Naderer, Markin, Hillary Seely and Courtney Karg took second (10:20.59), Sara Naderer was fifth in the high jump (4-6) and Sarah Murphy was sixth in the high jump (4-4).

Earning spots in Thursday’s finals were Heather Bumbalough in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Emily Evans in the 100, Karg and Hannah Hartsel in the 400, Ropp in the 300 hurdles and Karg and Kaycee Daniels in the 200.

WL-Salem’s boys were led by the 3200 relay of Seth Baker, Eric Salley, Matt Vogel and Brandon Shivley, who placed second with a time of 8:33.24.

The duo of Nate Bratka and Ethan Oakley also picked up points in the shot put. Bratka took fourth (45-6 1/2) and Oakley placed fifth (45-4 1/2). Austin Wilson also took fifth in the long jump (18-9).

Reaching the finals for the Tiger boys were Brice Baumgardner and Salley, who hold the two fastest times in the 400. Baumgardner ran a 53.15, while Salley ran 53.33.

Also earning their way into the finals were Lance Kitchen and Joe Yoder in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles, Charles Mack in the 100 and 200 and Baumgardner in the 200.

Triad’s girls saw Marissa Millice place second in the high jump (4-8) and the 3200 relay team of Brittney Baker, Angela Betts, Bobbi Custer and Jessica Murdock take fifth (10:59.8).

Cardinals reaching the finals were Betts in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and Murdock in the 400.

Triad’s boys earned points from Tyler Harper, who placed third in the long jump (19-1 1/4), and Gregg Reed, who was sixth in the long jump (18- 3).

Finalists for the Cardinal boys were Dustin Howell in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles and Josh Keatley in the 100 and 200.
