Tigers now 25-0 after sweep of Pirates
05/12/08 Host West Liberty-Salem combined potent hitting with dominating pitching to roll to a doubleheader sweep of Riverside in non-league softball action Saturday. The Tigers won the opener 10-0 in five innings and then took game two 13-1 in five innings. The two wins keep the Tigers perfect on the season at 25-0. The Pirates fall to 12-9. In the first game, Emily Kauffman fired a one-hitter for WL-Salem. Kauffman recorded six strikeouts. Abbey Ledford went 3-4 with two RBI and Brittany Mayse was 2-3 with a home run and two RBI to pace the Tigers at the plate in the opener. Shae Blake was 2-3 with two RBI and Kate Detwiler was 2-3 with a double to aid the Tigers’ offense. In game two, Emily Detwiler allowed just two hits to get the win in the pitching circle for WL-Salem. Leading the Tigers’ offense in the second game were Kaitlyn Kite (2-3, home run, three RBI), Kate Detwiler (2-3), Ellie Mescher (2-2), Sami Konkle (3-3, three doubles, two RBI) and Ledford (2-4, three RBI). The Tigers host Graham today, while the Pirates are at home Tuesday against Anna. GAME ONE GAME TWO Bellefontaine splits with Sidney Host Bellefontaine split a doubleheader against Sidney in non-league softball play Saturday. Sidney won the opener 1-0 in nine innings and the Chiefs took game two 6-2. Bellefontaine is now 15-9 on the season. “We had a couple of scoring opportunities in the first game, but we were not able to execute when we needed to,” said BHS head coach Jeremiah Vigansky. “The girls bounced back real nice in the second game, though. They hit the ball well and played pretty good defense.” In the first game, Courtney Smith had two hits to lead the Chieftain offense. Kara Morrison took the pitching loss despite allowing only three hits and striking out eight. Bellefontaine pounded out 10 hits in game two. Leading the offense were Morrison (double, single), Tiffany LeVan (two doubles, three RBI), Brandi Conrad (two hits), Katie Tarasiewicz (single, triple) and Heather Alinson (double). Justine Peterson was the winning pitcher for the second game. Peterson had two strikeouts and a walk while allowing three hits. “Both Kara and Justine were outstanding with their pitching,” said Vigansky. The Chiefs are back in action today at home against Greenon. GAME ONE GAME TWO
