West Liberty-Salem’s baseball team made a bold statement Monday in the final Ohio Heritage Conference game of the season.

The visiting Tigers used a two-hitter from Levi Woodruff to blank Triad 8-0, allowing WL-Salem to take the outright OHC title.

WL-Salem finishes OHC play at 13-1. The Tigers are now 18-3 overall.

“This was really important to our kids,” said WL-Salem head coach Toby Smith. “We kind of stubbed our toe a couple of times in the league last year, so the kids made winning it one of their goals before the season.”

Smith was especially pleased to see his seniors have the opportunity to finish their careers with a league championship.

“This is a great group of kids,” said Smith. “They want to work hard and they want to learn.”

Woodruff, one of the Tigers’ standout seniors, will long remember his final OHC game. He struck out eight and walked two in getting the win on the mound. He also had three hits at the plate. G

arrett Dallas had three hits and Levi Reed drove in three runs to aid the Tigers’ offense.

WL-Salem set the tone with a five-run second inning.

“That inning was really big for us because we scored in a bunch of different ways,” said Smith. “In that inning, we had three hits and two sacrifices. We were able to execute well when we needed to.”

Triad (13-8, 9-4) has turned in a respectable season, but little went right for the Cardinals on Monday. They were plagued by four errors in addition to only managing two hits at the plate.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday in nonleague games. WL-Salem plays at Bellefontaine, while Triad visits Riverside.

Raiders sting Falcons

Benjamin Logan stayed in first place in the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division with a 9-1 win at Graham on Monday.

The Raiders are now 12-7 overall and 9-4 in the CBC. They currently hold a onegame lead over Northwestern in the league race. Graham falls to 10-10, 6-7.

Ben Logan pounded out 16 hits against the Falcons.

“It was nice to see everybody make good, solid contact throughout the order,” said Ben Logan head coach Doug Rutan. “Even when we made outs, they were tough outs.”

Lee Kerns went 4-5 with two doubles and three RBIs to spearhead the Ben Logan offense. Shane James was 3-4 with a double, Logan Conley was 3-5 with a double and two RBI and Jonathon Robson had two hits.

Jeremiah Kerns was the winning pitcher. He struck out nine and did not allow a walk.

“Jeremiah did not have his best stuff, but he was able to battle and keep them off-balance,” said Rutan. “The defense also did a nice job behind him.”

Lakers clip Greenon

Visiting Indian Lake pulled out a 4-3 win over Greenon on Monday in a Central Buckeye Conference baseball game.

The Lakers are now 12-7 overall and 6-6 in the CBC. Greenon is 5-16, 2-11.

“We came away with the win, but we have to pick up our game,” said Indian Lake head coach Brian Tidwell. “We had a couple of days off and we just did not seem like we were in sync. We did not play as well as we are capable of. If we want to finish off our season strong and make a long tournament run, we have to pick it up a notch.”

The Lakers broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Michael Morgan was the winning pitcher. He recorded nine strikeouts and allowed five hits.

Nick Bozman was 2-4 with two RBI and Matt Yanchik was 2-4 with a double and RBI to lead Indian Lake’s offense.

The Lakers are back in action tonight at home against Greenon.

Cougars claw past Chiefs

Host Kenton Ridge rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat Bellefontaine 9-7 in a Central Buckeye Conference baseball game Monday.

The Chiefs fall to 10-7 overall and 7-6 in the CBC.

Bellefontaine led 6-0 after the top of the third inning, but the Cougars roared back to get the win.

“The big difference in the game was our inability to hold onto the lead,” said BHS head coach Mark Brunswick. “They hit the ball better as the game went on and they were able to close the gap.”

Jace Mills had a home run to lead the Chiefs at the plate. T.J. Garman and Mark Duffy each went 2-4 with triples, while Brandon Winter added two hits for Bellefontaine.

Lehman blanks Pirates

Riverside’s baseball team could not get the offense on track Monday as the Pirates fell to host Sidney Lehman 9-0 in a non-league matchup.

The Pirates are now 11-7 on the season.

Riverside struggled against Lehman pitcher Spencer Peltier, and that is what RHS head coach Jason McLain felt hurt his squad most.

“The Peltier kid was a hard-throwing lefty,” said McLain. “We just could not catch up with him.

“We also need to work on having quick bats and coming ready to play. Lehman had four infield hits and I felt our defense was on their heels and not ready to play.”

Austin Daniels and Jonathan Miller each recorded a hit for Riverside’s offense.
