Vito’s success continues with Grand Prix title
03/17/08 In perhaps the biggest moment of his career, Bellefontaine native Louie Vito won the halfpipe competition and the overall season title Sunday in the Chevy U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Killington, Vt. It was the third and final Grand Prix event of the season. Results from the three competitions were tabulated after Sunday’s finale, with Vito coming out on top in the overall race. He won two out of the three events during the season. As a part of his prize package, Vito was awarded a new Chevy Avalanche. “I’m stoked on the truck,” said Vito in a press release. “I got beat out of the tiebreaker last year so I guess I had to wait a year to get it, but now I have a fresh looking Avalanche and it feels good to get it.” The Killington Grand Prix event attracts some of the world’s best snowboarders, including Olympians and world champions. The battle for the overall title came down to Vito, his U.S. Snowboarding teammate Elijah Teter, last year’s Grand Prix title holder and Olympian Tommy Czeschin and former X Games champion Steve Fisher. Also in the running were Finland stars Janne Korpi and Petee Piiroinen. Vito turned in an outstanding first run, which led to his first-place finish . “I just wanted to handle it on my first run,” Vito said. “I’m happy. It was a good tour and a good season and now I can chill and enjoy the rest of the winter.” A broadcast of Sunday’s Grand Prix event airs at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, on NBC.
