Dean Sanford was part of something special in Riverside’s girls basketball program. He now hopes to have the same type of experience with the boys team.
Sanford, who compiled a record of 26-20 as the Pirates’ girls basketball team during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, was named the school’s new boys coach Tuesday evening.
When he stepped down as girls coach, Sanford cited the desire to become a head coach of a local boys team.
That opportunity arose recently at Riverside when Daniel Hickman left the program after one season. He decided to take a teaching job at Piqua City Schools.
“I am very excited to be back at Riverside,” said Sanford. “I spent the last three years looking for a boys position in the area, and I could not be happier for this to happen at Riverside.”
He led the Riverside 2009-10 girls squad to a 15-8 record. The Pirates won a league title as well as a sectional crown. He was selected the Division IV Southwest District coach of the year and the Ohio Division IV co-coach of the year that season.
