WL-Salem boys oust Irish in OHC match

West Liberty-Salem’s boys golf team captured an Ohio Heritage Conference victory Thursday after defeating visiting Springfield Catholic Central 147-157 on Monday at Liberty Hills Golf Course.

The Tigers improve their record to 3-0 on the season.

“The guys stepped up and played pretty well overall,” said WL-Salem head coach Darrin Leichty. “More importantly they went straight to the driving range afterwards and hit balls until dark. Their drive to improve is amazing.”

WL-Salem’s Nick Sims and Ethan McBean both fired 34s to share medalist honors. Dillon Callicoat carded a 38, Max Eggleston shot a 41, Logan Brown recorded a 42 and Kannon Stillings had a 44.

In junior varsity play, Bellefontaine beat WL-Salem 175-204.

Connor Burton led the Chiefs with a 41, Zach Reames shot a 44, Turner Scott and Josiah Jester each had 45s, while Derek Markley and Tarrin Breaston each had 49s.

For the Tigers, Trevor Davis and Michael Frederick each tallied 48s, Jake Woodruff had a 52, Tyler Gardner shot a 56 and Bryce Ward had a 75.
