Knee injury doesn’t keep Johnson off podium

COLUMBUS — Reacting to adversity can be an ultimate test of one’s character.

Brenda Johnson showed what type of heart and determination she has this spring after battling back from a major knee injury to place here Saturday at the Division II state track and field meet.

The Chieftain junior competed in the girls shot put with a torn ACL and a meniscus tear in her left knee, which is the leg she plants from to throw the shot put.

Despite the pain Johnson suffered Saturday and throughout the season, she came away with a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 39-4 1/4.

“It feels pretty good to place again,” said Johnson. “This is the best accomplishment I’ve had this year.”
