Springfield Catholic Central was seeded 11th out of 12 teams for the Division IV sectional baseball tournament. The Irish were much more explosive in Monday’s tournament opener against Riverside than what their seed would indicate.

The visiting Irish hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the first inning, and collected 13 hits en route to a 12-9 victory over the sixth-seeded Pirates.
“We had some errors that extended some innings, but give credit to SCC for putting the ball in play,” said Riverside head coach Derrick Purtee. “I was impressed with the way they hit the ball.”
The Pirates (12-15) were forced to play from behind after the Irish scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second for a 5-0 lead.
Riverside chipped away, getting three runs in the bottom of the third on the strength of an RBI double by Dalton Bollinger and an RBI single by Connor Cotterman.
