Riverside’s softball team repeated as Northwest Central Conference champions Friday after jolting host Ridgemont 11-1 in six innings.
The Pirates finish league play at 9-1 and share the league title with Lehman Catholic. Riverside (14-5) won the NWCC last season and marks the second time in five years.
“The girls played well,” said Riverside head coach Andy Phelps. “Even though we have to share the title, it is nice to stay league champs for two years in a row.”
It was the first year the NWCC used two rounds of play to decide the league champion. Phelps felt his team rose to the new challenge.
“It was tougher to maintain the focus,” said Phelps. “When you run spread a team the first time, it’s harder to play them again a second time. You still have to come into the game playing your best.
“It was nice we lost to Lehman the first time and were able to come back and beat them again. We played them much better our second time around. The girls all did a nice job in all 10 (league) games.”
