Cardinals’ Bruce runs out of steam

COLUMBUS — The emotions raced to the forefront for Rickey Bruce here Friday after the Triad senior was eliminated from the Division III state wrestling tournament.

Bruce (182) won his first match on Thursday but then faced two tough opponents on Friday and was eliminated.

“I’m happy I made it here even though I didn’t finish like I wanted to,” said Bruce. “I thought about the kids who didn’t make it here and I’m glad I was able to. I felt like I could have wrestled better than I did today. It was still a good experience.”

After winning his opening bout Thursday, Bruce lost his quarterfinal match Friday morning to defending state champion Travis Linton of Rootstown by a fall in 5:30.

Bruce then lost to Logan Campbell of Ashland Crestview by a 13-4 major decision in his consolation match.

He was a win away from placing in the top eight. Bruce was Triad’s first state qualifier since Jordan Deady earned a trip to Columbus in 2009.

“I’m definitely proud of Rickey,” said Triad head coach Matt Lawrence. “I would have liked to see him on the podium. He is capable of doing that, but it just didn’t turn out that way.”
