COLUMBUS — It was the type of start any wrestler would want here at the state wrestling tournament. Quick, powerful and statement making.

Triad senior Rickey Bruce (182) was all of those as he delivered a commanding win during his opening match Thursday at the Division III state wrestling meet inside the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

Bruce recorded a fall over Louis Wemyss of West Jefferson in 1:30 to move on to today’s quarterfinal round.

“It feels good to get a win here,” said Bruce. “I still have a long way to go, but it feels nice to get the jitters out.”
