Carroll’s Smart play overpowers Lakers in sectional tourney

SPRINGFIELD — Xander Smart landed the first blow. His teammates then finished Indian Lake off in the second half.

Smart, a 6-1 senior guard, scored all of his game-high 21 points in the first half to lead his Carroll boys basketball team to an 18-point lead over the Lakers at halftime of Wednesday’s Division II sectional semifinal.

Smart’s supporting cast helped Carroll surge to a 24-point cushion in the second half on their way to a 64-52 victory at Springfield High School.

“They have a great player in Smart and we knew that coming in,” said Indian Lake head coach David Starr. “But the thing that hurt us the most is their chemistry. They play extremely well together. As a unit, they are a tough team to contain.”
