Bellefontaine native Louie Vito turned in a respectable fourth-place finish in the final Olympic qualifier Sunday at Mammoth Mountain, Calif., but it was not quite enough for Vito to earn a berth to the Sochi games.

Taylor Gold, Greg Bretz and Shaun White grabbed the three U.S. Olympic halfpipe team spots during the five qualifiers. Danny Davis was awarded the fourth and final spot as a discretionary selection.

With three qualifiers remaining, Vito needed a big weekend to vault into an Olympic spot. He placed fourth and fifth in a pair of qualifiers Friday and followed that with another fourth-place effort Sunday afternoon.

His best of two runs Sunday was a 90.4. White won the event with a 96.6, Davis was second (95) and Ben Ferguson took third (93.8).

Vito was attempting to repeat as an Olympian after finishing fifth in the halfpipe at the Vancouver games in 2010.

He now turns his attention to the X Games this week in Aspen, Colo. In addition to competing, he will also serve as a commentator during ESPN’s television coverage. The X Games begin Thursday.
