Louie Vito stayed in the hunt for an Olympic berth Friday by finishing fourth and fifth in a pair of halfpipe snowboard qualifiers at Mammoth Mountain, Calif.
Last weekend’s Grand Prix final was canceled because of heavy snow and high winds, forcing a stretch of three qualifiers in three days to determine the list of halfpipe snowboarders that will compete at the upcoming Sochi Games.
In the third of five qualifiers, Vito placed fourth Friday afternoon behind Danny Davis, Taylor Gold and Matt Ladley.
Shaun White, who did not compete in the early qualifier Friday because of a hard fall Thursday, won the second qualifier of the day. Scotty Lago was second and Gold took third. Vito was fifth.
The final qualifier is Sunday, and it will be followed by the official announcement of those moving on to compete at Sochi.
