Tigers top Pirates in local matchup


West Liberty-Salem’s girls basketball team used a big third-quarter burst to put away visiting Riverside 48-33 on Saturday in a local non-league contest.

The Tigers are now 1-1 on the season and the Pirates fall to 0-2.

The teams were even at 8-8 after the opening period.

WL-Salem began to take command in the second quarter, outscoring the Pirates 9-4 to take a 17-12 lead at halftime.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 14 points (29-15) after three quarters.

WL-Salem was led by a double-double from Jamie Peterson, who scored 15 points and recorded 13 rebounds.
