Resilient Lakers grab overtime win over WL-Salem

Indian Lake’s girls basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to tie host West Liberty-Salem and went on to prevail in overtime for a 58-54 win Saturday in a local non-league battle.

The victory evens the Lakers’ record to 1-1 as the Tigers start off 0-1.

Indian Lake came away with a 14-10 lead after the opening quarter, but WL-Salem rallied to outscore the Lakers 12-6 in the second quarter. That gave the Tigers a 22-20 edge at halftime.

In the third quarter, WL-Salem pushed its lead to five points (36-31) entering the final stanza.

The Lakers battled back to outscore the Tigers 18-13 in the fourth quarter, which tied the game at 49-49.

In overtime, Indian Lake prevailed with a 9-5 effort.

“This was a great win for us,” said Indian Lake head coach Tim McMahon. “A lot of things went against us, but the girls kept fighting during the fourth quarter and overtime to get the win.”

Sydney Miller and Sammi Miller each had 15 points to power Indian Lake’s win, while Haley Boberg added 11 points.

“Sydney made some big shots in the fourth quarter and in overtime Sydney hit a big three and made some big free throws,” said McMahon. “It was a complete team effort. Everyone that played contributed in some way.”

Jamie Peterson sparked the Tigers with a game-high 19 points and Sydney Eggleston had 14 points.

In junior varsity action, WL-Salem won 36-29.

WL-Salem hosts Graham on Tuesday in non-league action and Indian Lake hosts Kenton on Monday, Dec. 2.
