Tigers sitting in sixth at state golf tourney

West Liberty-Salem’s boys golf team sits in the middle of the field after the first day of action Friday at the Division III state tournament in Columbus.

The Tigers recorded a 343 on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State University. That score was good enough for sixth in the 12-team tournament.

WL-Salem will look to move up in the standings in today’s final round.

Columbus Academy leads the Division III field with a 323. Toledo Ottawa Hills is second with 329, Wellington School is third with 335, Ashland Crestview is fourth with 336 and Lancaster Fisher Catholic is holing onto fifth with 341.

Individually, Nick Sims led WL-Salem with a low of 77. He is fifth in the current individual standings. He shot a 36 on the front and a 41 on the back.

Also for the Tigers, Ethan McBean carded an 83, Jacob Rutan had an 84, Kannon Stillings recorded a 99 and Casey Gay had a 101.

Jegg Coughlin of Powell Village Academy had the best round of the day with a 73.
