It was a heartbreaking day as a whole for Bellefontaine’s boys golf team, but there was one bright spot for the Chiefs following the Division I sectional tournament Wednesday at Reid Park in Springfield.
Bellefontaine’s Cody Lyons advanced to his second straight Division I district tournament by earning one of the four individual qualifying spots at Wednesday’s sectional.
The Chiefs shot a 334 to tie for fourth place with Troy. However, the Trojans won the spot on a fifth-score tiebreaker and received the final team berth at next week’s district tournament in Middletown.
The top four teams and the top four remaining individuals not on a qualifying team moved on to districts.
While Bellefontaine fell short as a team, the Chiefs did qualify an individual to the district tourney as senior Cody Lyons shot an 82. He was involved in a three-way tie for the third individual qualifying spot. The three golfers had to go to a playoff to determine the final two district qualifiers.
Lyons emerged in the top two after the first playoff hole to get his second straight district berth. The Chieftain senior will play next Thursday at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.
“Although Cody didn’t strike his irons to his usual potential, he was stellar with his short game and made some big putts to put himself in a position to get to the playoff for a spot out,” said BHS coach Ryan Sawmiller.
