The top-seeded Cardinals are now 10-16 on the season and will play in the sectional championship at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Houston at West Liberty-Salem.
The Pirates end their season at 15-10.
“We just did not hit the ball tonight,” said RHS head coach Andy Phelps. “We knew coming in that we had to hit in order to compete and we did not. This marks the end for five seniors that have done some great things at Riverside. They will be missed greatly.”
Triad scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 6-0 advantage.
The Cardinals scored one run in the bottom of the fourth frame and tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. That gave them an 8-0 lead and the Pirates were never able to mount a comeback.
Hannah Watkins fueled the Cardinals’ win on Thursday. She tossed a two-hitter in the pitching circle and led the offense by going 3-4 with a home run and four RBI.
Also for Triad, Maddie Ehrenborg went 2-4 with a triple and a double, Jenna Welty went 2-3 with a double, Macie Jenkins hit a double and Dayna Ober went 2-2.
Recording hits for Riverside were Taylor Anderson and Heather Comer.
