Raiders blank Urbana 7-0 in sectional opener

Benjamin Logan’s softball team churned out a 7-0 win over visiting Urbana on Tuesday in a Division II sectional tournament opener.

“Our girls have played really well these last couple games,” said Ben Logan head coach John Stahl. “I’m very proud of them. We are hitting on all cylinders, our pitching has been great all year and now the defense and batting is finally consistent.”

The fifth-seeded Raiders improve their record to 18-10. They now face third-seeded Kenton Ridge in the sectional semifinal on Thursday in Springfield. The Cougars are currently ranked second in the Division II state poll and have a 24-2 record.

“We needed to be playing our best softball at tournament time and I believe we are,” said Stahl. “The girls are confident and want to make a run in this tournament.”

Ben Logan scored one run in the bottom of the second inning and one run in the bottom of the third inning for a 2-0 edge.

The fourth inning saw the Raiders plate three runs to extend their lead to a 5-0 score. They added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the 7-0 victory.

Courtney Stewart earned the win in the pitching circle. She gave up just three hits, while striking out eight batters.

Offensively, Kate Campbell went 3-3 with two triples, a double and two RBI, Taylor Coy went 2-3 with a triple and two RBI, Stewart went 2-4 with a double, Melina Hilty had a double and an RBI, Jess Dodson had two RBI and Taylor Quay went 2-3.

Triad blanks Troy Christian

Triad started the postseason off with a bang Tuesday, blanking visiting Troy Christian 20-0 in five innings in a first-round sectional tournament game.
