Harmon fifth at nationals; Local wrestlers begin league meets

If there was ever proof that hard work and perseverance pay off, Kerstin Harmon is a shining example.

A former standout wrestler at Indian Lake, Harmon continues to excel at the college level and is now a junior on the University of the Cumberlands women’s wrestling team.

Last Saturday, Harmon placed fifth at 136 pounds at the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships. The finish earns her All-American status for the second year in a row after placing sixth last season.

“Every year the competition of women’s college wrestling is increasing significantly,” said Harmon. “This year I had to wrestle every single match as if it was the finals. To leave the tournament with a win was an awesome feeling.

“There was one match that should have gone the other way, but other than that I was very happy with my performance and I learned a lot.”
