Local runner completes series of long-distance trail runs

For most runners, a marathon is the ultimate test of inner strength and endurance. Todd Bumgardner needed more.
Bumgardner, a 42-year-old Bellefontaine resident, recently completed a grueling series of ultra runs in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Named the Beast Series, the six-race circuit features distances ranging from a 50K (30 miles) to a 100-mile run.
Bumgardner began running competitively in 2000 and worked his way to marathon running in 2006. His progression continued to ultra running (distances over marathon distance of 26.2 miles) and trail running.
βI tried a trail marathon in 2007 and it really clicked for me,β said Bumgardner. βIt was a whole different experience. I really enjoyed running trails through the woods and through hills.β
