Bellefontaine’s girls basketball team is poised to end a long string of disappointing seasons this fall. Through two games, the Chiefs are well on their way to accomplishing their goal.

Bellefontaine captured the Wapakoneta Perfection Group Tip-Off tournament championship Saturday night with a 69-62 win over Waynesfield-Goshen in the title game.

The Chiefs (2-0) defeated Wapakoneta in the first round of the tourney Friday.

“It was a great effort by the girls to pull out a win and start the season 2-0,” said BHS head coach Brian Hogan.

It was a closely contested game from the start. The Chiefs led 17-12 after one quarter and 35-31 at halftime.

Bellefontaine held a six-point cushion (50-44) after three quarters and then held on down the stretch for the victory.

The Chiefs were able to overcome a game-high 32 points by W-Goshen standout guard Kaylee Patton.

Sophomore guard Brenda Johnson had a big game to lead the Chiefs. She hit three three-points shots and scored 20 points.

She had plenty of support. Regan Price scored 10 points, Kameren Haley and Whitney Rader each had nine points and Sajah Carter added eight points.

W-Goshen won the rebounding battle 37-30. Rader tallied eight rebounds and Kameren Haley had seven rebounds to lead the Chiefs on the boards.

Price added six assists and Kameren Haley chipped in four steals.

Bellefontaine returns to action Tuesday at Marysville in a non-league game.
