Bellefontaine’s Cody Lyons missed qualifying to the state tournament by six strokes after competing in the Division I district tournament Thursday at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.
The Chieftains finished with an 81, shooting a 43 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine. A score of 75 or better would have advanced him to the state tournament.
“I thought Cody battled and overcame a lot of obstacles beyond his control,” said BHS boys head coach Ryan Sawmiller. “First, he had to overcome a course that was over 7,000 yards, and there is no course within a 30-mile radius even close to that yardage to Bellefontaine. Our home course is 1,000 yards shorter. Second, he had never played the course before. Third, he had to wait out a one and a half hour frost delay, and last, after three holes, he was 4-over par.
“My hat goes off to how our junior represented Bellefontaine and our golf program. I am very proud of Cody on his accomplishments this season and has raised the bar for others and himself as he returns as a senior next year.”
