Indian Lake’s girls golf team was unable to earn a return trip to the district tournament Wednesday, but sophomore Morgan Barnett did manage to qualify through as an individual.
The Lakers came up one spot short of advancing as a team, placing fifth at the Division II sectional tournament Wednesday at Stillwater Golf Course in Versailles.
The top four teams and top four individuals earned district berths for next week’s tournament at Pipestone Golf Course in Miamisburg.
Indian Lake finished with a score of 425, which was four strokes lower than last season’s performance which earned the team a berth in the district tourney.
The highlight for the Lakers was the play of Barnett, who has been one of Indian Lake’s top golfers all season. She gave another stellar performance Wednesday with a round of 91 to claim the second individual qualifying spot.
“I’m really proud of the effort our girls put forth this year,” said Indian Lake girls head coach Mike Pusey. “I’m disappointed for them, though. They were so close to qualifying again. Morgan put a cap on a great season by qualifying to district. The whole team is rooting for her to have a great showing next Wednesday.”
Versailles beat Springfield Shawnee by one stroke 403-404 to win the sectional championship. Ft. Loramie finished third with 412 and Covington nabbed the final qualifying berth with 415.
Indian Lake junior Sean Pusey and Triad sophomore Summer Detrick each missed qualifying as individuals by one spot. Both golfers had scores of 97.
Also for the Lakers, Kylie Speicher carded a 113, Ashley Wall had a 124 and Murphy Oberle added a 142.
