The Tiger boys finished fourth at the Division III sectional tournament at Beechwood Golf Course near Arcanum, while Lane advanced as an individual.
The top four teams and top four individuals moved on to the Division III district tournament on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.
Botkins won the Division III sectional tourney with a 339 and Fairlawn took the runner-up spot with 341. Franklin-Monroe and WL-Salem tied for third with 354, but the Tigers lost the tiebreaker to finish fourth.
Riverside finished six strokes back from advancing as a team and was fifth with a score of 360.
Although it was not the Tigers’ best performance of the season, they still were happy to reach the district tournament.
“Four of our five guys were over their average, but at this point we are just happy to be moving on,” said WL-Salem boys head coach Darrin Leichty. “We were well prepared for the ‘trouble’ holes and played them well. Our lack of focus on two par 5s nearly cost us a chance at advancing.”
Nick Sims led the Tigers with a low round of 81, Jacob Rutan fired an 87, Casey Gay had a 91, Ethan McBean carded a 95 and Matt Kauffman recorded a 112.
Riverside’s Lane fired an 87 to earn the third individual qualifying spot. He carded a 42 on the front and a 45 on the back.
The Pirates’ Dustin Proffitt missed qualifying to the district tournament by one stoke and finished with an 89. The final individual qualifier advanced with an 88.
Also competing for Riverside were Grant Miller and Landon Kelsey with 92s and Ross Stevens with a 136.
Triad had two golfers compete in the sectional on Tuesday. Seth Donohoe carded a 90 and missed advancing by two strokes, while Ryan Kaylor recorded a 116.
Fairlawn’s Trey Everett was tournament medalist with a 76. He carded a 37 on the front and 39 on the back.
