It was a heartbreaking loss more painful than most.
Indian Lake built a 35-19 fourth-quarter advantage Friday night, was the sharper team and seemed poised for a 2-0 record with a big victory over Kenton Ridge in its home opener.
And then the story line changed.
The Cougars recovered two fumbles, returned them for touchdowns and scored 20 points in the game’s final 5:15 to stun the Lakers 39-35.
Running back Chris Teague accounted for 189 yards and three touchdowns for Indian Lake. He carried the ball 16 times for 173 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards.
A quick-strike scoring attack helped the Lakers overcome a pair of first-half deficits, carrying them to a 14-12 halftime lead.
