Shawnee rallies to clip Laker girls Springfield Shawnee pulled away in the closing minutes from visiting Indian Lake on Thursday to claim a 57-51 win in girls Central Buckeye Conference action. The Lakers slip to 10-10 overall and 7-9 in the CBC, while the Braves improve to 10-9, 9-6. It was a disappointing loss, said Lakers head coach Mike Pequignot. We had opportunities to win the game. We were tied 49-49 with two minutes to go and were unable to make plays. We just need to be more consistent with our play. A positive is that we play them in the tournament on Wednesday so we will get another chance against them. The Braves led 14-12 after the opening quarter and outscored the Lakers 13-10 in the second stanza. Indian Lake jumped ahead in the third period, outscoring the Braves 19-12, to take a 41- 39 lead. But Shawnee outscored the Lakers 18-10 in the final quarter. Cori Blackburn led the Lakers with 22 points and five steals. Sadie Oyer added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Laura Blust scored eight points. Cori really stepped up and hit some deep threepoint baskets for us, said Pequignot. She had a great game. Indian Lake won the reserve game 46-38. Emily Watkins scored 19 points to lead the Lakers. Indian Lake takes on the Braves again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Division II tournament action at Vandalia-Butler. |
