Ohio Ready Mix pulls off unusual feat

Ohio Ready Mix and Shoreline Construction recently teamed up to complete concrete work on an Indian Lake island without street access by loading a concrete truck on a barge and floating the materials to the worksite on Pony Island.

The two entities met to determine the total estimated carrying capacity of the construction company barge, used the lightest truck in the Ready Mix fleet and turned what would ordinarily be a one-time delivery into three separate trips to reduce the total weight.

The Ready Mix truck was driven to Long Island where it was carefully backed onto the barge with ramps and secured, with special attention paid to loading the truck in the center to distribute the weight evenly. Any misjudgment could have easily capsized the barge, said an Ohio Ready Mix spokesperson.

Estimated weight of the truck and material was 48,000 pounds and the concrete was used to build a patio and sidewalk along the water’s edge.

The project was successfully completed without any problems.
