I would like to encourage you to vote No on the West Liberty-Salem proposed building expansion. The WL-S school district is not in a stable financial position and has been "getting by" only through reductions in teaching staff and other critical positions. Multiple teaching positions have been eliminated resulting in reduced class offerings. In addition, teachers' aide positions have been reduced at the expense of one on one time in elementary classrooms.
Voters have been told the expansion is needed because of growing enrollment and "maintenance issues." What you haven't been told is the "new" students are "open enrolled" students who should be going to another school in the first place. The parents of these outside students do not and will not pay any of the taxes toward a new building. They are simply taking advantage of the residents of West Liberty-Salem.
Now is not the time for an unnecessary building expansion. Instead, the focus of the district should be on insuring students who live in the district are getting the best education.
Please join me in voting No on the West Liberty-Salem Building Levy.
