John McAlexander, 70, of Katy, Texas, formerly of West Liberty, passed away Thursday, Aug.24, 2017, following a battle with cancer.
He was born in Bellefontaine on Dec. 5, 1946, to the late Donald and Alice McAlexander of West Liberty.
In April 1968, John married the former Barbara Markin of Urbana. She survives, along with a son, Brian (Heather) McAlexander of Katy, Texas; a daughter, Amy (John) Knag and granddaughter Fiona Knag, all of New Boston, N.H., a grandson, Tyler McAlexander of Houston, Texas; a granddaughter, Avery Lucas of Katy, Texas; a brother, Don (Nancy) McAlexander of Tipp City; and a niece, Lisa McAlexander of Mt Vernon.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James “Jim” McAlexander.
John graduated from Bellefontaine High School in 1964, Urbana College in 1966, and Ohio Northern University in 1968. He worked 40 years in the oil industry. After graduating from ONU, he went to work for Marathon Oil Company in Findlay. His career with Marathon was interrupted when he served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War.
Following his retirement from Marathon Oil Company, he worked for British Petroleum, retiring in 2008 from British Petroleum’s Headquarters in London, England.
John was a great husband, brother, father and grandfather. You could depend on hearing from John if he didn’t hear from you, and when he was with you, you had his full attention. He was devoted to a healthy life style, and very much into physical fitness. Along with his brother, he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, in 2008.
Pastor Bonita Ritchie officiates a graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, through arrangements by Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Bellefontaine.
