Our sweet mother, Merrie (pronounced Mary) Root, 61, passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 14, 2017, in the hospital with her children present.
She was born in Lima on Nov. 12, 1955, to the late Edward and Mary Tharp Maurer. As the youngest of seven children, she was preceded in death by all of her siblings, including her oldest sibling, Shirley Slaybaugh, who passed away just one day before her, and Dolores “Lolly” Helmlinger, Judy Pickering, Phil Maurer, Greg Maurer and Pat Spees.
Merrie is survived by two children, Brooke (Bob) Faulder and Blake (Sherimae) Carter; three grandchildren, Chase Szima and Brenton and Hailey Carter; three great-grandchildren, Patton, Zayne and Ivan; and several nieces and nephews.
Before her long and arduous battle, and even during when she could find the strength, our mom enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved to go on cruises and had been on several in her lifetime. She loved playing cards and taking trips to the casino. She also loved to bake and won several awards for her pies, cookies and cakes. She loved poetry and has a book of poems she’d written herself. But mostly she loved sharing whatever she had with others. She was the most kind and generous person. If you were lucky enough to know her, you surely loved her. She loved her children beyond measure.
Our mother loved holidays, especially Christmas and always made holidays special for us when we were kids. She was the most thoughtful person when it came to giving gifts and would sometimes spend months crafting them for us.
As her children, we have elected to start the long process of learning to live without her in our own way. In lieu of services, according to Merrie’s wishes, we have elected to grieve at home and celebrate her life by cherishing our memories. I will be having her ashes made into heirloom jewelry and some of her ashes will be spread by her cruising friend in the Caribbean this December.
In accordance with Merrie’s wishes, the family is not having traditional services, but will be setting up and inviting family and friends to a celebration of life at a later date.
In honor of her spirit, donate to a charity (her favorite was St. Jude) or if you knew her and have a memory you’d like to share, reach out to us on social media.
“The gates of heaven open wide to let an angel get inside. But this earth, as you leave, my friend I know, will surely grieve.” — Merrie Root,
Services are in the care of Jennings Farley Funeral Home and Crematory.
