William Arthur Roth, 86, of Jackson Center, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 13, 2017, at Lakeside Manor VA Hospice in Dayton.
He was born in Russells Point on Feb. 15, 1931, to the late Arthur G. and Edna F. Shafer Roth. Bill was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack E. Roth; and stepdaughter, Patricia Wildermuth.
A 1949 graduate of Lewistown High School, Bill served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He then went to work at Merchant’s Industries in Bellefontaine, and worked there for 38 years. Following his “retirement,” he worked until he was 79 at several other businesses in the area.
Bill was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Rhine, and had previously been a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Bellefontaine Elks.
Bill was a kind-hearted man and actively served in his community. He cherished family time and his grandchildren. Bill was an avid Ohio State fan and enjoyed basketball, fishing, hunting and reading.
Bill is survived by his wife, Helen L. Baker Roth of Jackson Center; his children, Michael W. (Beth) Roth of Boulder Junction, Wis., Debra S. (Brent) Jeffers of West Liberty, Robert E. Roth of Huntsville and Nancy L. Roth of Xenia; three stepchildren, Bill Wildermuth and Michael (Deb) Wildermuth, both of Jackson Center, and Mark Wildermuth of California; numerous grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his first wife, Berdonna L. Meyers Hughes of Huntsville, whom he married in 1951; and John H. James of Bellefontaine who was like a son to Bill.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, Jackson Center. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Rhine.
